Ice-grabber thingies! Back when blocks of ice were harvested from frozen rivers and stored in ice houses before delivery to the ice boxes in homes, these were used to handle the ice blocks.
ReplyDeleteYes, Jean! I was going to buy a pair at an antique store but they were expensive. Plus they were really heavy!
DeleteDang. My guess was old timey tooth puller-ma-jiggy.
ReplyDeleteIssy, they are indeed ice tongs. Much bigger than they look in the picture.
DeleteGuessed ice tongs. Childhood visits to the ice house with my father were where I encountered similar looking tools. I am anticipating learning more about your history adventures. I bought the book, read it and tried to locate the creek on Google Maps. I wanted to involve grands in book and a sense of place, but our couple days with them was already booked solid.
ReplyDeleteYou are so awesome!
LC, Peachtree Creek runs through much of Atlanta. There's a great book of photography entitled Peachtree Creek: Natural and Unnatural History of Atlanta's Watershed. It's on my coffee table. It shows the beauty and the pollution.
